What is Marathi?
Marathi is a major Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly by the Maharashtrians of India. It belongs to the Kannada-Malayalam branch within the South Central zone of the Dravidian language group. As of 2020, it was estimated to have around 85 million speakers worldwide, making it one of the most widely spoken languages globally. Marathi is also recognized as the official language of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is co-official in Goa, Daman and Diu.
History of Marathi Language
The history of this ancient language can be traced back over two thousand years when it developed from Prakrit, which itself evolved out of Vedic Sanskrit. Early evidence of its usage can be found in the Inscriptions of Satavahana Kings from the Deccan Plateau during their rule between the 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD. The first documented text using Marathi script dates back to the year 932 AD. Over time, Marathi has borrowed extensively from Sanskrit and other regional languages such as Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindustani.
Dialects & Geographic Distribution
There are several dialects of Marathi spanning across three regions: Western, Northern, and Eastern Maharashtra (Vidarbha region). These variations arise due to historical, cultural, and linguistic differences among various groups speaking Marathi. Some notable examples include Vadval, Bhandara, and Korku, while others like Kolhapuri and Poona are more widespread.
Writing System: Devnagari Script
Unlike some other Indian languages, Marathi does not have its own unique writing system; instead, it uses the Devanagari script, which is also employed for Sanskrit and many northern Indian languages. This shared script helps bridge the gap between these different languages and facilitates communication and literature exchange among them.
Importance of Marathi Literature
Marathi literature plays a significant role in contemporary India, with renowned writers contributing masterpieces ranging from poetry and prose fiction to drama and criticism. Notable figures from Marathi literature include Jnanpith winners Bhalchandra Nemade and Sadashiv Govind Patwardhan, along with Sadashiv Bhau Wategaonkar who won the Padma Shree award. Furthermore, Marathi cinema represents a vital part of the Indian film industry, producing numerous critically acclaimed films like Ajintha, Aaranye, and Anantyacha Jivan, all directed by celebrated director Sanjay Surve.
In conclusion, Marathi is a vibrant language with a rich history, diverse dialects, and a strong literary tradition. Its importance lies not only in its contribution to modern society but also in preserving centuries of heritage through its writings and art forms.
