What is Marathi?

Marathi is a major Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly by the Maharashtrians of India. It belongs to the Kannada-Malayalam branch within the South Central zone of the Dravidian language group. As of 2020, it was estimated to have around 85 million speakers worldwide, making it one of the most widely spoken languages globally. Marathi is also recognized as the official language of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is co-official in Goa, Daman and Diu.

History of Marathi Language

The history of this ancient language can be traced back over two thousand years when it developed from Prakrit, which itself evolved out of Vedic Sanskrit. Early evidence of its usage can be found in the Inscriptions of Satavahana Kings from the Deccan Plateau during their rule between the 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD. The first documented text using Marathi script dates back to the year 932 AD. Over time, Marathi has borrowed extensively from Sanskrit and other regional languages such as Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindustani.

There are several dialects of Marathi spanning across three regions: Western, Northern, and Eastern Maharashtra (Vidarbha region). Writing System: Devnagari Script

Unlike some other Indian languages, Marathi does not have its own unique writing system; instead, it uses the Devanagari script, which is also employed for Sanskrit and many northern Indian languages.
