Study Notes

  • A map presents information about features on Earth's surface
  • Map drawing concepts, features, symbols, scale, tools, simple/digital map steps will be covered
  • Can draw maps of classroom, school, ward, district, and Tanzania

Concept of Map Drawing

  • Map drawing represents the locations of Earth's surface features on paper or flat surfaces
  • Cartography is the study of map drawing
  • A cartographer is a person who draws maps
  • Map symbols are used to represent features like roads, houses, rivers, and mountains
  • Proportions between area, objects, and symbols should be maintained

Map Features

  • Maps can display roads, buildings, rivers, oceans, mountains, valleys, parks, forests, and boundaries
  • Maps include important features for users
  • Cartographers decide what to include based on user needs
  • Maps should be easy to read and understand

Map Symbols

  • Maps use symbols to represent real objects
  • Map symbols are small drawings representing real objects
  • Symbols describe features simply and understandably
  • All symbols are explained in the map key

Map Scale

  • Map scale is the ratio between distance on the map and the real distance on the ground
  • The scale relates measurements on the map to real-world measurements
  • Scale can be presented as a statement, representative fraction/ratio, or linear scale
  • Statement scale: describes the ratio of distance on the map to the real distance on the ground using words (e.g. "one centimetre on the map represents one kilometre on the ground")
  • Representative Fraction/Ratio: uses numbers to show relation between map distance and real distance (e.g. 1:50000)
  • Linear scale: graphical representation of ground distance using a line

Map Drawing Tools

  • Tools include a drawing table, paper, pencil, dividers, protractor, eraser, pen, sharpener, coloring materials, and ruler
  • Other tools: laptop, smartphone, tablet, digital drawing board, and digital drawing pen
  • Software: Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Geographical Information System (GIS)

Simple Maps

  • A simple map is drawn without using a scale to show the location of features on the earth's surface
  • First identify the size, shape, and direction of the area
  • Then identify shapes, sizes, and locations of important features
  • Sketch a square or rectangle on the paper, leaving space for the map title, key, and explanations
  • Place a North direction symbol in the upper right corner
  • Draw a shape within the square or rectangle representing the boundaries of the area
  • Use symbols to represent key features, oriented correctly
  • Start with larger features and add smaller ones
  • Prepare a key that explains all symbols
  • Write the title of the simple map
  • Ensure all important features are shown
  • Draw a frame (square/rectangle) around the map and all important elements

Classroom Maps

  • To draw a classroom map:
  • Identify the size, shape, and direction of the classroom
  • Determine the shapes, sizes, and locations of important items
  • Prepare the drawing area with a square or rectangle, leaving space for the title, key, etc.
  • Follow the steps for drawing a simple map

School Maps

  • A school map shows the school layout, including playgrounds, buildings (classrooms, offices), and other areas
  • To draw a school map:
  • Identify the size, shape, and direction of the school
  • Determine the size, shapes, and locations of important features
  • Prepare the drawing area with a square or rectangle, leaving space for the title, key, etc.
  • Follow the steps for drawing a simple map

Ward Maps

  • A ward is an administrative area including villages or streets
  • Drawing a ward map involves showing the boundaries and geographical features (hospitals, schools, churches, mosques, roads, and rivers)

District Maps

  • A district is an administrative division within a country, comprising several wards
  • Each district is led by a District Commissioner appointed by the President

Tanzania Maps

  • The map of Tanzania provides information about the country
  • Information can include the capital city, Mount Kilimanjaro, railways, the ocean and lakes, regional boundaries, and borders

Digital Map Drawing

  • Digital map drawing uses computer technology or smartphones with specialized software
  • Examples of software: ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD, and Google My Maps
  • Google My Maps is easier to use, with an accessible interface
  • Steps for using Google My Maps:
  • Access a device with internet
  • Have a Google account
  • Identify the geographical area to map (e.g., boundaries, roads, lakes)
  • Open a browser and go to Google. Type "Google My Maps"
  • Go to the 'Create a New Map' menu
  • Search for the location
  • Click the search button to display it
  • Draw its boundary. To start drawing the boundary, click "Draw line" then "Add line or shapes"
  • Start drawing the map by tracing the boundary
  • Continue drawing until you return to the starting point to complete the boundary
  • Complete, the cursor will change from an additional sign to a pointing finger. Click the left mouse button or double-tap the right mouse button if using a touch screen to complete the drawing
  • Type the word, click save
  • Change the title to match map content
  • Change appearance using different available colors
  • Add a map key, left-click the three vertical dots at the bottom on the left side of the map. Select "Rename this layer"
  • Type "Key" in the "Edit layer name" box
  • Print the map for future use. You can print a digital map in two ways: as a PDF file or as an image
  • To do this, go to the three dots on your map, then select "Print map"
  • Select the paper size, paper orientation, and format for printing (either PDF or image). Then click "Print" to save the map as a PDF or image

Vocabulary

  • Browser: software to access and view websites on the internet
  • Interface: device/program enabling user to communicate with a computer
  • Mouse: handheld input device to control a computer by moving a pointer/clicking items
