10 Questions

What is the purpose of the archimedes screw in injection moulding?

To send the granules forward and melt the plastic.

What is the primary difference between injection moulding and extrusion moulding?

The shape of the final product, with injection moulding producing a solid shape and extrusion moulding producing a long tube-like shape.

What is the role of the air hose in blow moulding?

To allow high-pressure air to enter the mold and shape the plastic.

What is the purpose of heating the plastic in vacuum forming?

To make the plastic soft and pliable, allowing it to take the shape of the mold.

What is the purpose of kerfing in woodworking?

To allow wood to bend into a desired shape without snapping.

What is the purpose of soaking wood in a steam box, and how long should it soak for?

To make the wood flexible, with a soaking time of one hour per inch of thickness.

What are the two types of holes that should be drilled for hardwoods, and when should they be used?

A pilot hole and a clearance hole, with a countersink before drilling for better screwing results.

What is the purpose of a CMM in the CNC process, and what file type is used for the CNC machine?

To ensure precision, and a .g file is used for the CNC machine.

What is the main difference between hardwoods and softwoods in terms of growth rate and leaf type?

Hardwoods take 100 years to grow, have broad leaves, and lose their leaves in winter, while softwoods take 30 years to grow, have needle-like leaves, and are evergreen.

What is the purpose of felling, and what is gained from it?

Felling is cutting down a tree, and it allows us to gain wood and other forest products.

Study Notes

Plastic Moulding Processes

  • Injection moulding: granules are fed into a hopper, melted by heated jackets, and forced into a mold by a hydraulic ram.
  • Extrusion moulding: granules are fed into a hopper, melted, and forced through a die to form a long tube-like shape.
  • Blow moulding: granules are fed into a hopper, melted, and formed into a hollow tube, which is then cooled and shaped.

Woodworking Processes

  • Kerfing: a process that involves marking and cutting lines on a piece of wood to allow it to bend, then gluing and clamping the wood to hold its shape.
  • Steaming: a process that involves using steam to make wood flexible, then bending it to the desired shape.
  • Laminating: a process that involves soaking wood strips in water, gluing them together, and bending them around a former to dry.
  • Screwing: a process that involves drilling pilot holes and countersink holes to screw wood together.
  • CNC (Computer Numerical Control): a process that involves creating a CAD design, saving it as a G-file, and using a CNC machine to cut and shape the material.
  • Routing: a process that involves using a router to shape and profile wood.
  • Turning: a process that involves shaping wood on a lathe, using a gauge and sander to smooth the surface.

Types of Wood

  • Hardwoods: take 100 years to grow, have broad leaves, and seeds in the form of fruits.
  • Softwoods: take 30 years to grow, have needle-like leaves, and seeds in the form of cones.

Tree Felling

  • Felling: the process of cutting down a tree, which allows us to gain wood for various purposes.

This quiz covers the processes of injection moulding and extrusion moulding, including the steps involved in each method.
