Perspectives on Information Systems
- An information system is a software system that captures, transmits, stores, retrieves, manipulates, or displays information to support people, organizations, or other software systems.
- Information is a basic resource like materials, money, and personnel, and should be properly managed to ensure its cost-effective use.
The Information Concept
- Information is data that has been interpreted so that it has a meaning for the user.
- Information can be distinguished by source (internal or external) or by form (numeric or nonnumeric).
- Internal information is generated within an organization and is of interest and value only to decision makers within that organization.
- External information is created by others, such as publishers, governments, external contacts, and the like.
Information Systems Concept
- Information systems are systems that accept data/information as a raw material and generate information as a product through one or more transmutation processes.
- Information management is the organization-wide capability of creating, maintaining, retrieving, and making immediately available the right information, in the right place, at the right time, in the hands of the right people, at the lowest cost, in the best media, for use in decision making.
Components of Information Systems
- Perception: initial entry of data whether captured or generated, into the organization.
- Recording: storing data.
- Processing: transformation according to the specific needs of the organization.
- Transmission: the flows, which occur in an information system.
- Storage: presupposes some expected future use.
- Retrieval: searching for recorded data.
- Presentation: reporting, communication; and decision making.
Types of Information Systems
- Three classes of information systems:
- Personal information systems: manage and store information for a private person. Examples: address book, audio CD collection.
- Enterprise information systems: tailored toward the support of an organization. Examples: workflow management systems, enterprise resource planning systems, data warehouse systems, geographic information systems.
- Public information systems: manage and store information that can be accessed by a community.
Classification of Information Systems
- Information systems can be classified into:
- Information Retrieval system (IR)
- Question-answering system
- Database System (DBS)
- Management Information System (MIS)
- Decision Support System (DSS)
Management Information Systems
- MIS is a sub-system of information systems.
- MIS is tailored toward the support of management decision making.
- Examples of MIS in various industries:
- Hospital information systems
- Airline reservation systems
- Electronic learning systems
