Study Notes
Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrates characterized by hair, fur, skin glands, and mammary glands for nourishing their young with milk. They belong to one of two classes: Prototheria, which includes monotremes like platypuses and spiny anteaters; or Metatheria, including marsupials such as kangaroos and wallabies; or Eutheria, also known as placental mammals like rodents, bats, primates, carnivores, artiodactyls, perissodactyls, etc..
There are around 6,278 species of mammals living today, making up more than half of all animals on Earth. These diverse creatures range from small insectivorous shrews to large herbivorous elephants and even humans. Some interesting facts about mammals include:
- Their body structures allow them to live in extreme conditions: cold places where they can keep themselves warm, hot deserts where they can cool off quickly, mountains where they get used to high altitudes, and underwater where they have developed special adaptations.
- Most mammals mate once every year, although there are exceptions. For example, rabbits and hares breed twice each year, while reindeer breed only once every three years.
- Many mammals are social beings, forming groups to hunt together or protect each other. In some cases, like wolves, this kind of group is called a pack.
- A lot of different kinds of habitat can support mammal populations. This means that mammals can survive well in many types of environments, from forests to grasslands and savannas.
- Not all mammals spend time outdoors. Some, like moles and certain types of dolphins, mostly stay underground or swim in water.
- Baby mammals usually need their mothers' help right after birth. But when baby giraffes are born, they are already able to stand tall enough so that they don't fall over! And no matter how big they grow, giraffe babies always want their mother close by.
As a class of animal, mammals play important roles in ecosystems. They contribute to the cycle of life by eating plants, catching prey, pollinating flowers, spreading seeds, and helping people make food and medicine. Without a healthy population of wild mammals, our world would change forever.
