Study Notes
- This is lecture 2 of chapter 27 and covers the anatomy of the male reproductive system
Testes
- Gonads that produce sperm
- Housed within the scrotum
Testes Anatomy
- Has two lobes
- Sperm is created in the seminiferous tubules
- Seminiferous tubules connect to form a straight tubule
- Sperm proceed to the rete testis, then efferent ductules, then the epididymis
- Sperm is stored in the tail of the epididymis until ejaculation
- Supplied by the autonomic nervous system with a rich blood supply
- Arteries, veins, nerve fibers, and lymphatics are enclosed by a connective tissue sheath known as the spermatic cord
Scrotum
- Contains paired testes
- Temperature is 3°C lower than core body temperature
- Lower temperature is necessary for sperm production
- Temperature affects the scrotum
- When cold, the testes are pulled closer to warm body wall via the cremaster muscle, and skin wrinkles to decrease surface area by the dartos muscle
Penis
- Male copulatory organ that delivers sperm into the female reproductive tract
- Scrotum and penis are referred to as external genitalia of the male
Penis Anatomy
- Consists, of root, body (shaft), and glans penis
- The skin covering it is loose and forms a cuff distally, called prepuce, or foreskin
- Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin
Penile Anatomy
- Contains the spongy urethra
- Three cylindrical bodies of erectile tissue: corpus spongiosum and corpus cavernosum
- Filled with smooth muscle and vascular spaces
Male Perineum
- The scrotum attaches here
- Contains the root of the penis and the anus
- Diamond shaped, bordered by the pubic symphysis, coccyx, and ischial tuberosities
- The floor is comprised of muscles
