Study Notes

Male Reproductive System

  • The male reproductive system consists of scrotum, testes, epididymis, prostate, seminal vesicles, Cowper's glands, urethra, and penis.
  • The smooth muscle is called the dartos muscle, which contracts with cold or sexual stimulation.
  • Each testicle is divided into lobules, containing immature sperm that mature and become viable sperm.
  • The spermatozoa are produced in the testes, and during sexual excitation, smooth muscle in the walls contract to propel sperm.

Anatomy of the Female Reproductive System

  • The female reproductive system consists of ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva.
  • The mammary glands are separated by dense connective tissue that supports the glands and attaches them to the chest wall.
  • The breasts are composed of larger ducts that end just behind the nipple.

Hormones

  • Testosterone, androstenedione, and dihydrotestosterone are the principal testicular hormones involved in prenatal growth and development.
  • Progesterone and estrogen are the principal hormones involved in female reproductive development.

Reproductive Disorders

  • Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is a condition experienced by males aged 45 and over, where glandular tissue thickens due to stimulation by testosterone.
  • Prostate cancer can be treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery, and the cure rate exceeds 90% for individuals with seminoma.
  • Testicular cancer can be treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery, and the cure rate is approximately 80% for those with seminoma histology.

Menopause and Climacteric

  • Menopause can be caused surgically by removing the ovaries, or chemically, and is characterized by symptoms such as depression, vaginal dryness, and emotional irritability.
  • Climacteric is the period of time leading up to menopause, characterized by symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

Infertility and Sexual Dysfunction

  • Infertility can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, anatomical abnormalities, and genetic disorders.
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) can be caused by a range of factors, including diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, neurological disorders, and certain medications.

Female Reproductive Disorders

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and ovulatory dysfunction.
  • Fibroids are noncancerous growths that can cause bleeding, pelvic pain, and reproductive problems.
  • Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain and infertility.
  • Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, and can be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy.

Other Conditions

  • Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland, which can be acute or chronic, and can be treated with antibiotics, analgesics, and surgery.
  • Epididymitis and orchitis are conditions characterized by inflammation of the epididymis and testes, respectively.
  • Hydrocele, spermatocele, and varicocele are conditions characterized by fluid accumulation, cysts, and varicose veins in the scrotum, respectively.

Test your knowledge about the male reproductive system anatomy, including organs such as the scrotum, testes, prostate, and penis. Learn about the functions and structures of key components like spermatozoa and Cowper's glands.
