Duties of Shop Superintendent

  • Supervisor: Responsible for loco shed maintenance under DEE/AEE(RS) control.
  • Supervisory Duties:
    • Guide and instruct subordinates on maintenance methods and schedules.
    • Monitor maintenance to reduce unscheduled loco withdrawals and frequent troubles.
    • Initiate steps to recommission locos out of service.
    • Maintain and keep the loco shed clean.

Duties of Electrical Foreman

  • Liaison: Maintains communications with the operating wing to ensure timely availability of locos.
  • Planning and Scheduling: Plans scheduled and unscheduled repairs, keeping shed capacity and inspection berth utilization in mind.
  • Job Cards and Coordination: Issues job cards, coordinates section work, and ensures timely turnout of locos after repairs.
  • Revisions: Maintains documents that allow for revision of maintenance practices and instructions.
  • Record Maintenance: Maintains history registers, equipment cards, modification charts, and other relevant records.
  • Shop Coordination: Coordinates with workshops for POH and special repairs, provides information / records to shops.
  • Statistics & Records: maintains engine-kilometers, failure records, etc.
  • Tyre Turning: Manages wheel wear records and programs tyre turning.
  • Reporting: Provides shed statistics to the HQ office.

Duties of Section Supervisors

  • Job Card Scrutiny: Examines the job card for a loco requiring inspection, identifies additional work requirements, and gets approval.
  • Work Allotment: Allots tasks to subordinates with any necessary special instructions.
  • Timely Completion: Ensures timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Post-Repair Inspection: Monitors staff's work to ensure correct functioning and immediate corrective actions in case of any reported malfunctionings during or after repair/overhaul.

Distribution of Work Load

  • Section Variation: Work load distribution structures can vary between different railway systems.
  • E1 responsibilities: Preventive maintenance inspections and overhauling schedules on battery chargers, investigating / troubleshooting electrical loco/EMU issues, checking / testing nominated locos for VIP or superfast trains, oversee/check nominated Electric locos / EMUs.
  • E1 section staff: Quality assurance group, supervisors, & artisans perform checks on all scheduled / unscheduled locos.
  • E2 responsibilities: Electrical inspections and repairs of parts, head lights, flasher lights, other electrical components / equipments in BA panels, TFP, RPS, SL, Programme switches, MP, EMC, DBR, SMGR, CGR and tap changer, cable sockets, and cable connections, traction motor maintenance, disconnection / connection of motors, auxiliary motors.
  • E3 responsibilities: Scheduled and unscheduled repairs, modifications, and overhaul of traction motors, disconnection / connection operation of motors, auxiliary motor maintenance.
  • E4 responsibilities: Scheduled & unscheduled repairs, modifications, overhauls of electrical equipment like relays, speedometers, ammeters, voltmeters, circuit breakers, disconnect and connect speedometer & DJ connections during unscheduled repair.
  • E5 responsibilities: Major repairs & overhaul of EP, EM, contactors, smoothing reactors, RPS, flasher light, MP, TFP oil filtration, CGR, SMGR, tap changer -during IOH schedule / unscheduled visits and modifications, Removal &fitment of EMCs, EPCs, RPS, DBR during AOH schedule.
  • E6 responsibilities: Removal & fitment of SL, SMGR, Tap changer during IOH schedule, Overhauling of BA panels, head light, TK panel, SB panels, rotary switch board and switches during AOH/IOH schedule, cleaning of cable junction boxes and cables, Overhauling of SMGR and GR.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Materials: Keeping track of stores & testing instruments, and initiating appropriate steps for timely recoupment of stores.
  • Maintenance: Ensuring efficient maintenance of all shed plant and machinery, coordinating with TLC & TF(R) regarding loco withdrawal , POH and staffing relief
  • Training: Coordinating with Training School for staff training and refresher courses.
  • Stock Management: Stock holder of all locos, assemblies, and sub-assemblies, and unit exchange spares.
  • **Tests and Trials:**Document reports on tests and trials to improve inspection schedules.
  • Specification Updates: Maintains record of all specifications and drawings, stocking advice and also tracks consumable stores usage.
