- Gandhi adopted the practice of nonviolent resistance in his campaigns, which led to his imprisonment many times.
- On August 15th, 1947, Britain granted independence to India and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan.
- Gandhi visited the newly independent areas to try and alleviate distress, but the violence continued.
- In the months following independence, Gandhi undertook several hunger strikes to try and pressure the Indian government to pay out some cash assets owed to Pakistan.
