Macroscopic Anatomy
Macroscopic anatomy is the branch of anatomy that deals with structures visible to the naked eye. It involves studying the shapes, sizes, positions, arrangements, relationships, functions, and interrelations of these structures, which can range from organs within a single organ system to entire organ systems within a body. This field of study requires knowledge of both human anatomy, including bones, muscles, and organs, as well as comparative anatomy, which compares features of different species.
Bones
Bones are hard, supporting tissues found throughout the body. They serve multiple purposes, such as providing structural support, protecting vital organs, storing minerals, and facilitating movement through the attachment of muscles. There are 206 bones in humans, grouped into four categories based on their shape: long, short, flat, and irregular. Long bones, like those in the limbs, have a cylindrical structure and contain bone marrow inside their hollow cavities.
Muscles
Muscles are primarily composed of contractile proteins called actin and myosin filaments. These proteins interact to produce force, allowing muscles to move bones and perform other functions. Muscle size doesn't necessarily correlate with strength; rather, muscle efficiency and motor control play more significant roles. Humans possess approximately 600–840 skeletal muscles depending on how they are counted, each connected by tendons to bones.
Organ Systems
Organ systems are groups of organs that work together to maintain life and health. Major organ systems include the integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, immune, lymphatic, reproductive, and immune system. Each of these organ systems plays an essential role in maintaining homeostasis and overall health. For example, the integumentary system, consisting of skin, hair, and nails, protects the body against environmental harm.
