Machine Translation (MT)
- Humanity's dream of mechanizing translation has become a reality through computer programs that can translate a wide range of texts from one natural language to another.
Current State of MT
- No 'translating machines' can produce perfect translations without human intervention or assistance.
- Programs can produce 'raw' translations of texts in well-defined subject domains, which can be revised to produce good-quality translated texts at an economically viable rate.
- Without human revision, translations can be read and understood by specialists for information purposes.
Achievements of MT
- With controlled input texts, high-quality translations can be produced automatically, requiring little or no revision.
- Solid achievements have been made in MT, but are often obscured and misunderstood.
Public Perception of MT
- Two extreme positions distort the public perception of MT:
- Underestimation: language analysis is considered easy, and anyone who knows a foreign language can translate with ease.
- Over-expectation: automatic translation of literary authors is not feasible, so there is no role for computer-based translation.
Importance of MT
- Less-than-perfect translation can still contribute to improved international communication and individual work.
