Gearbox Components

• Metal sealing rings are used in transmission systems where some leakage is acceptable.
• Bushes are cylindrically shaped and held in place by press fit, taking radial load and supporting rotating parts.
• Thrust washers are used to limit end play and reduce friction between two rotating parts, often in combination with flat thrust washers.

Synchronizers

• A 3-speed all helical gear, synchromesh gearbox (transmission) of a passenger car has 3 forward speed and one reverse speed for selection.
• In neutral position, there is no flow of power from the engine-clutch primary shaft to the gearbox main shaft.

Drive Line Types

• Front-wheel drive has the engine and driveline located between the front driving wheels.
• Rear wheel drive line transmits engine torque to the driving wheels or rear driving axle.
• Drive line represents universal joints, drive shaft, and other parts transmitting engine torque to the driving wheels.

Universal Joints

• A universal joint provides a flexible connection between the gearbox and the rear axle, accommodating variations in angle and permitting smooth transmission of torque.
• Universal joints are used to connect the propeller shaft and the pinion shaft of the differential, and between the propeller shaft and the gearbox.
• Types of universal joints include:
  • Hotchkiss drive
  • Torque tube drive
