TPR Procedure for Dogs
- Temperature: Use an ear thermometer. Place the cover on the thermometer before use. Insert it into the lower ear canal at a 90-degree angle. Normal range: 37.5°C to 39.4°C.
- Pulse: Use a stethoscope. Position the earpieces in the dog's ears. Position the patient in standing, sitting, or sternal recumbency. Listen to the heart on the left side of the chest, at the 5th or 6th intercostal space. Count the heartbeats for 15 seconds then multiply by 4 to get the total beats per minute. Normal range for dogs is 70-130 beats per minute. Normal sounds are strong and steady – a “lub dub”. Abnormal sounds include weak, murmuring, or washy sounds.
- Femoral Pulse: Place your hand on the inside of the rear leg at mid-thigh. Feel for the femoral artery pulsing, count the pulses and note the rhythm.
- Respiratory Rate: Observe the rise and fall of the chest and abdomen. Count the breaths in 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to determine breaths per minute. Listen to the lung sounds with a stethoscope. Notify instructor of any abnormal lung sounds. Normal rate: 10-30 breaths per minute. Normal sounds should be clear. Abnormal sounds may be described as crackles or wheezing.
