Study Notes
Lymph Node Structure and Function
- Lymph nodes filter lymph, removing foreign material like bacteria.
- Macrophages and antibodies destroy pathogens in lymph nodes.
- Some inorganic particles may remain inside macrophages.
- Lymph nodes progressively filter lymph, removing foreign matter and cell debris.
- Lymph node enlargement sometimes indicates inflammation, like lymphadenopathy.
Lymph Node Location
- Submandibular nodes are located near the jaw.
- Deep cervical nodes are deeper in the neck.
- Superficial cervical nodes are on the surface of the neck.
- Occipital nodes are at the back of the head.
Lymph Node Cellular Components
- Lymph node tissue contains reticular cells, white blood cells, and macrophages.
- Scanning electron micrographs show this cellular composition.
- Macrophages and lymphocytes have been seen in tissues.
Spleen Structure and Location
- The spleen is the largest lymphatic organ.
- Located in the left hypochondriac region of the abdomen, between the stomach and diaphragm.
- Approximately 12 cm long, 7 cm wide, and 2.5 cm thick, weighing about 200 g.
- Enclosed in a fibroelastic capsule, with trabeculae.
- The splenic pulp contains lymphocytes and macrophages.
Spleen Function
- Contains lymphatic and reticular tissue.
- Removes damaged red blood cells from circulation.
- Filters and removes foreign matter from blood.
Organs Associated with the Spleen
- Lies superiorly/posteriorly to the left colic flexure.
- Lies inferiorly to the fundus of the stomach.
- It's anteriorly related to the pancreas and the left kidney
- The 9th, 10th and 11th ribs and the intercostal muscles are separated by the diaphragm.
