Study Notes
The Lymphatic System
- The lymphatic system gathers fluid that is squeezed out of capillaries by the heart's pumping action and brings it back into circulation.
- Lymph vessels do not have a heart of their own, but they are able to pump fluid in one direction and back into the high-pressure circulatory system.
Location of Reentry
- Lymph reenters the circulatory system at the very end of the venous circulation system, where the pressure is much lower (around 5 mmHg) compared to the arteries (around 120 mmHg).
- This location makes it easier for lymph to enter circulation, as it has to fight against much less pressure.
Valves
- Valves in lymph vessels prevent fluid from flowing backward, allowing lymph to move in one direction.
- Valves operate on the principle that fluid can push the leaves of the valve apart to flow forward, but when fluid tries to come back, the leaves close, creating an obstacle.
- This mechanism is also used in the heart and veins to prevent backward flow.
Mechanisms of Lymph Motion
- Smooth muscle contractions in lymph vessels can start the motion of lymph fluid.
- Skeletal muscle contractions, such as those from voluntary movements, can also start the motion of lymph fluid by squeezing lymph vessels.
Lymph Vessels
- Lymph vessels have porous walls that allow fluid to enter, but prevent fluid from leaving once the pressure inside rises.
- This mechanism ensures that lymph cannot flow backward out of the vessel.
Reentry into Circulation
- Lymph reenters circulation through the subclavian veins, which are located near the superior vena cava, just before the heart.
- This location has very low pressure, making it easier for lymph to enter circulation.
