Flashcards

What is the Lumbar Plexus?

A major nerve pathway supplying the lower limb, primarily the anterior thigh muscles. It's formed by the upper four lumbar nerves.

What is the Femoral Nerve?

One of the six major branches of the Lumbar Plexus, this nerve is crucial for controlling the muscles of the anterior thigh, allowing for leg extension and movement.

What is the Obturator Nerve?

This nerve controls the adductor muscles of the medial thigh, allowing for movements like bringing your legs together.

What is the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve?

This nerve is responsible for supplying sensory information to the skin on the outer and front surfaces of the thigh, providing sensations like touch, pressure, and temperature.

What is the Genitofemoral Nerve?

This nerve is a smaller branch of the Lumbar Plexus that plays a role in the innervation of the abdominal wall, genitals, and some areas of the thigh.

What is the Iliohypogastric Nerve?

This nerve, along with the Ilioinguinal Nerve, supplies sensory information to the lower abdominal wall, parts of the genitals, and the upper medial thigh.

What is the Ilioinguinal Nerve?

This nerve shares the role with the Iliohypogastric Nerve in supplying sensory information to the lower abdominal wall, and also provides sensation to the upper inner thigh.

Is there a 'Lumbar Nerve' in the Lumbar Plexus?

The Lumbar Plexus, unlike the other types of nerve plexuses, does not include a specific nerve called the 'Lumbar Nerve'.

Study Notes

The Lumbar Plexus

  • Part of the larger lumbosacral plexus
  • One of the main pathways supplying the lower limb
  • Formed from the upper 4 lumbar nerves
  • Gives off 6 major branches

6 Major Branches of the Lumbar Plexus

  • Iliohypogastric (L1)
  • Ilioinguinal (L1)
  • Genitofemoral (L1, L2)
  • Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (L2, L3)
  • Femoral (L2, L3, L4)
  • Obturator (L2, L3, L4)

First 3 Nerves (to ignore for now)

  • Iliohypogastric & Ilioinguinal mainly supply muscles and skin of the abdominal wall
  • Ilioinguinal has a cutaneous branch over the upper medial part of the thigh.
  • Iliohypogastric has a cutaneous branch over the buttock.
  • Genitofemoral mainly supplies the genitals and has a cutaneous branch over the anterior surface.

Important Nerves - No. 1: Femoral Nerve

  • Root value: L2, L3, L4
  • Largest branch of the lumbar plexus
  • Enters the thigh behind the inguinal ligament
  • Main nerve of the anterior compartment of the thigh

Important Nerves - No. 2: Obturator Nerve

  • Root value: L2, L3, L4
  • Passes through the obturator foramen into the thigh
  • Main nerve of the medial (adductor) compartment of the thigh

Important Nerves - No. 3: Lateral Cutaneous Nerve of the Thigh

  • Root value: L2, L3
  • Enters the thigh under the lateral end of the inguinal ligament
  • Supplies skin of anterior and lateral surfaces of the thigh
