Love and Intimacy

  • Intimacy is the psychological component of love, involving knowing and being known by someone on a deeply personal level.
  • Passion is the emotive and physical component of love, driving individuals towards sexual and romantic attraction.
  • Commitment is the decision to engage and maintain a loving relationship.

Types of Love

  • John Alan Lee's (1973) theory proposes six types of love: Eros (sexual/romantic), Philia (friendly), Storge (parental/filial love), Pragma (practical love), Agape (universal love), and Philautia (self-love).
  • Sternberg's (1986) Triangular Model of Love consists of passion, intimacy, and commitment, and proposes eight types of love, including infatuation, liking, empty love, romantic love, ludic love, friendly love, and consummate love.
  • Hatfield & Rapson's (1987, 1993) theory proposes two general types of love: romantic love (intense passion) and companionate love (intense intimacy).

Love Languages and Intimate Relationships

  • Gary Chapman's (1995) Love Languages theory proposes that people express and receive love in five ways: words of affirmation, touch, quality time, gift-giving, and acts of service.
  • George Levinger's (1982) ABCDE of Intimate Relationships proposes that relationships go through five stages: acquaintance, buildup, consolidation and continuation, decline and deterioration, and ending.
