Living in Harmony
- Pollution is the process where humans make their surroundings dirty by adding harmful substances to soil, water, air, and land.
- Water pollution occurs when water bodies are contaminated with harmful chemicals and other substances.
- Factory and household waste, improper disposal, oil spills, oil tanker leaks, washing clothes/utensils in water bodies, and mixing soil and dust in the water are major causes of water pollution.
- Since 1986, Texas Adopt-A-Beach volunteers have collected nearly 10,000 tonnes of trash from beaches.
- Oil tankers can leak oil during transportation, polluting water. This also happens when washing clothes and utensils in water bodies, mixing soil and dust into the water, and oil spills.
- Water pollution also occurs when people wash their clothes and utensils in ponds, lakes, and rivers, mixing soil and dust with the water, contaminating it.
Land Pollution
- Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides can harm the land, farmers, and contaminate water and soil harming their health.
- Improper garbage disposal, especially plastic bags, causes significant land pollution.
- These non-biodegradable materials take a very long time to degrade.
- Garbage and industrial waste lead to land pollution.
- Surplus crops, modern farming methods, and pest control measures contribute to food production and exporting.
- Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides negatively affects the land, contaminating water and soil and harming farmers.
Air Pollution
- Air pollution occurs due to natural and human activities.
- Burning fuels in homes, factories, and vehicles releases harmful gases like carbon dioxide, sulfur oxide, and carbon monoxide.
- Smoke from factories, burning firecrackers, and natural causes like forest fires, sandstorms, and volcanic eruptions contribute to air pollution.
- Polluted air can cause health problems like asthma, bronchitis, other respiratory issues, damage to lungs and eyes, allergies, headaches, and skin irritation.
- Acid rain, another effect of air pollution, damages water, soil, and forests and has a negative impact on human health.
- Air pollution also leads to smog (mixing of smoke and fog), resulting in pollution and asthma. Smog can also contribute to health issues.
- Increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leads to global warming, which is the trapping of heat in the Earth's atmosphere. This leads to climate change and unwanted changes in the climate.
Noise Pollution
- Noise pollution occurs when harmful and irritating sounds disrupt the natural environment and human activities.
- Loud noises from vehicles, trains, music, and other sources, can cause noise pollution.
- Sounds exceeding 90 decibels are harmful to human ears; normal sound is 20 decibels.
- Noise pollution can lead to hearing loss, stress, and other health issues, including insomnia.
Protecting the Environment
- Saving the environment is crucial for survival.
- Destroying trees will harm many organisms that depend on them and can also cause extinction.
- Reducing, reusing, and recycling are essential practices to protect our environment
- Recycling is a way to process waste materials into new products.
- Examples include metallic cans, paper, and glassware.
- Reducing, reusing, and recycling are essential to save the environment.
- When we damage our environment, we indirectly harm ourselves.
- It is important to keep our surroundings clean. This includes keeping our surroundings clean and practicing the three Rs—reducing, reusing, and recycling.
