Types of Liver Diseases

  • Viral Hepatitis: inflammation of the liver caused by viral infections (Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E)
  • Fatty Liver Disease: accumulation of fat in liver cells, can lead to inflammation and scarring (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Alcoholic Liver Disease)
  • Liver Cirrhosis: scarring of the liver due to chronic liver disease, leads to liver failure
  • Liver Cancer: primary liver cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma) or secondary cancer that spreads to the liver
  • Autoimmune Liver Disease: immune system attacks the liver (Autoimmune Hepatitis, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis)

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Viral Infections: Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E
  • Alcohol Abuse: chronic and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity: increases risk of fatty liver disease
  • Family History: genetic predisposition to liver disease
  • Environmental Toxins: exposure to chemicals and toxins

Symptoms and Diagnosis

  • Symptoms: fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine
  • Diagnosis: medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests (blood tests, imaging studies), liver biopsy

Treatment and Management

  • Medications: antiviral therapy, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants
  • Lifestyle Changes: weight loss, healthy diet, avoidance of alcohol and toxins
  • Liver Transplant: in advanced cases of liver disease and liver failure
