Types of Liver Diseases
- Viral Hepatitis: inflammation of the liver caused by viral infections (Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E)
- Fatty Liver Disease: accumulation of fat in liver cells, can lead to inflammation and scarring (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Alcoholic Liver Disease)
- Liver Cirrhosis: scarring of the liver due to chronic liver disease, leads to liver failure
- Liver Cancer: primary liver cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma) or secondary cancer that spreads to the liver
- Autoimmune Liver Disease: immune system attacks the liver (Autoimmune Hepatitis, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis)
Causes and Risk Factors
- Viral Infections: Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E
- Alcohol Abuse: chronic and excessive alcohol consumption
- Obesity: increases risk of fatty liver disease
