Types of Irony

  • Situational irony: An event that is unexpected to what is thought to happen.

    • Example: Unexpectedly winning a $100 gift card in a school raffle when you filled out only one entry, while friends filled out more.
  • Dramatic irony: An event is unexpected to the main character(s) but expected to the audience.

    • Example: A surprise party is planned for a friend, and when the friend opens the door, their friends are there, surprising them.
  • Verbal irony: The literal meaning of the words is different from the intended meaning.

    • Example: Saying "Yay!" with a deflated tone when presented with a presentation.

Foreshadowing

  • Definition: Clues in a story to predict or hint at upcoming events.

Flashback

    • Objects (the ring in Lord of the Rings symbolizes a desire for power and greed)
    • Imagery or extended metaphor (image of butterfly to describe the movement of ballerina in a dance; Inside Out- all characters are the emotions).
    • Mentioned frequently throughout a story (personal items of protagonist or antagonist in the story, Katniss's bow in The Hunger Games symbolizes her strength and power).

Allusion

  • Definition: A reference to a well-known person, place, event, story, or work of art, literature, music, pop culture.
  • Purpose: Helps the reader/viewer understand new information, characters, plot, setting, etc., by connecting it to something already known.
  • Allusions are NOT references to something only a small group of people know.
    • Example: "Sally's smile looked like my mom's smile."
