Study Notes
Lipolysis
- The main product of lipolysis is glycerol and free fatty acids.
- After being released from adipocytes, glycerol is transported to the liver and converted to glucose or oxidized to produce energy, whereas free fatty acids are transported to the liver and other tissues, where they can be oxidized to produce energy or re-esterified to form triglycerides.
- The rate-limiting step of lipolysis in adipocytes is the phosphorylation of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) by protein kinase A.
- Hormones that act to increase cAMP synthesis by adenylate cyclase and stimulate lipolysis are epinephrine, norepinephrine, and glucagon.
- The substance that acts as a fat mobilizing substance from the pituitary and stimulates lipolysis is adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).
Test your knowledge on the process of lipolysis, including the hydrolysis of triglycerides and the production of free glycerol and fatty acids. Explore the sites involved in this process and the fate of glycerol and fatty acids.
