Linear and Non-linear Text
- Linear text is read from beginning to end
- Also called linear reading
- Most common type of reading
- Readers understand by following grammatical and syntactic arrangements of the words
- Examples include textbooks, newspapers, journals, magazines, novels
- Non-linear text is not sequential
- Readers understand the text in many ways
- Can include visuals and graphs
- A reading technique where you look for main ideas is utilized
- Does not follow a particular sequence
- Examples include pie charts, tables, graphs, histograms
- A useful feature allows one to eliminate lengthy stories
- Takes the most important information visually.
Concept Mapping: Pre-reading Texts
- Story Pyramid: organizing key details from a text
- Has 8 lines that represents different aspects of the story, including the plot.
- Pre-reading the texts using organizing techniques aids comprehension
Sharing Information Using Opinion – Marking Signals
- Fact: objective, verifiable, states reality, logically constructed
- Includes accurate information that can be proven true
- Opinion: subjective, unverifiable, personal ideas, interprets reality
- Something that somebody thinks or feels
- Subjective and relative
- Opinion-marking signals are words or phrases that indicate feelings
- Help identify opinion statements
- Usually found mostly at the beginning of sentences

Multimodal Texts
- Refers to communication using multiple modes such as written language, images, sound and gestures
- 3 types:
- Live: presented in real time (e.g., dance, oral presentation)
- Digital: created and presented digitally (e.g., film, animation, slideshow, e-story, digital story)
- Paper-based: presented on paper, often combining text with images (e.g., infographics, graphic text, posters, comics, pictures).
- Multimodal text is a valuable tool for communication, learning and inclusion.
Different Viewing Genres
- Genre is a way of categorizing films, TV programs and music
- Popular music is categorized based on content or specific audience.
- Types of genres:
- News: updates on world, country, or community events
- Animated: cartoons on TV with themes for different age groups
- Drama: highly emotional stories, some with sad endings
- Variety Show: includes games, songs, and dance performances
- Horror: intended to scare with supernatural beings
- Comedy: intended to entertain with jokes and pranks
- Educational: intended for education of children, teenagers or adults
- Fantasy: uses unreal characters and plots, including magic and supernatural elements
- Children: shows for children, often educational
Compare and Contrast Convictions
- Comparison words show similarity
- Also, equally, like, same way, just as, alike, in like manner
- Contrast words show difference
- But, however, in contrast, variation, yet, differ, conversely, difference still, on the contrary, on the other hand
Positive and Negative Messages
- Positive message: communication with good news, encouragement, or congratulations.
- Negative message: communication with rejections, discouragements or criticism.
- Indirect approach: delivering a negative message with a positive buffer statement.
- Direct approach: straightforward negative statement.
Buffer
- A sentence used to cushion bad news
- Example: "We are genuinely sorry for the inconvenience, but we have to transfer you to another bus."
Ways to Transform Negative Messages to Positive Ones
- Word choice: Using positive language
- Emphasis: Focus on the positive aspect rather than negative ones Minimizing negative language
