6 Questions

What is the primary function of a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR)?

To indicate the presence or absence of light, or to measure the light intensity.

What is the typical resistance of an LDR in the dark?

Very high, sometimes up to 1MΩ

What is the principle behind the operation of a piezo buzzer?

Piezoelectricity, where certain crystals change shape when an electric signal is applied to them.

What is the primary advantage of a piezo buzzer?

It is a small, efficient, and compact component that can be easily used on a breadboard.

What is the typical application of a light dependent resistor in a street lamp?

To control the lighting of the street lamp based on the presence or absence of light.

What is the main difference between an LDR and a piezo buzzer?

An LDR is a sensor that responds to light, while a piezo buzzer is an output device that produces sound.

Study Notes

Light Dependent Resistor (LDR)

  • A photoresistor or light dependent resistor is an electronic component sensitive to light.
  • When light falls upon it, the resistance changes.
  • Used to indicate the presence or absence of light, or to measure the light intensity.
  • In the dark, the resistance is very high, up to 1MΩ.
  • When exposed to light, the resistance drops dramatically, even down to a few ohms.
  • Applications: solar street lamps, night-lights, clock radios, photographic light meters, fire or smoke alarms, and lighting controls for street lamps.

Buzzer

  • A small yet efficient component to add sound features to a project/system.
  • A very small and compact 2-pin structure that can be easily used on a breadboard.
  • A "piezo buzzer" is a tiny speaker that can be connected directly to an Arduino.
  • "Piezoelectricity" is an effect where certain crystals change shape when electricity is applied to them.
  • By applying an electric signal at the right frequency, the crystal can make sound.
  • Applications: alarms, automobile alerts, warning devices, electronic fields, and pest deterrent machines.

Test your knowledge of Light Dependent Resistors (LDRs), an electronic component that changes resistance in response to light, and its applications in various devices.
