Study Notes
Properties of Light
- Light is a form of energy that enables us to see things.
- Light is not a matter as it has no mass and occupies no space.
Importance of Light for Plants
- Light is essential for plants to carry out photosynthesis and produce their own food.
- Plants respond to light by growing towards it.
Sources of Light
- Sources of light are objects that emit light on their own.
- We can see them directly when light from the sources enters our eyes.
- Sources of light can be classified into natural and artificial sources.
Natural Sources of Light
- Examples of natural sources of light include the Sun, stars, fireflies, and lightning.
Artificial Sources of Light
- Examples of artificial sources of light include computer screens, candle flames, street lamps, and torchlights.
Behavior of Light
- Light travels in straight lines (light rays) and does not bend around objects.
- If there is no straight path from an object to our eyes (blocked by opaque objects), we cannot see the object directly.
Reflection of Light
- Reflection occurs when light bounces off an object and changes its direction.
- We can see objects that are not light sources when light from a light source is reflected off the object into our eyes.
- Example: seeing our own reflections in a mirror when light from a light source shines on us, is reflected by our body into the mirror, and then into our eyes.
