Life Processes - Nutrition
- Nutrition is the process of taking in food and converting it into energy and essential nutrients for life
- Life processes are those essential for an organism to survive on Earth
- Autotrophic nutrition: Organisms that can synthesize their own food using simple inorganic compounds like water and CO2. They use sunlight or another energy source to create food and are also called producers
- Example: Plants use sunlight and chlorophyll for photosynthesis to make food
- Heterotrophic nutrition: Organisms that cannot produce their own food and depend on other organisms for food. They obtain energy and nutrients by consuming other organisms
- Example: Animals consume plants or other animals for food
- Mixotrophic nutrition: Organisms capable of both autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition. They can obtain energy from different sources.
- Example: Some protists can perform photosynthesis (autotrophy) and also consume other organisms (heterotrophy) for energy
