Study Notes

7 Life Processes

  • Living organisms perform 7 essential life processes: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition.

Photosynthesis

  • Definition: Chemical reaction converting sunlight into potential energy, stored as sugars (glucose to starch), releasing oxygen.
  • Requirements:
    • Water (H2O): Absorbed by plant roots from soil, a reactant in the chemical reaction.
    • Carbon Dioxide (CO2): Absorbed by plants from the atmosphere, primarily through stomata (tiny pores) on leaf undersurfaces.
    • Sunlight (Radiant Energy): Provided by the sun, converted into potential energy during photosynthesis.
    • Chlorophyll: A green pigment in chloroplasts, absorbs radiant energy from the sun.

Stomata

  • Pores in leaves, mostly on the undersurface, surrounded by guard cells that change shape to open or close stomata.

Test your knowledge on the 7 life processes that all living organisms carry out, including photosynthesis which is the process of converting sunlight into energy and releasing oxygen. Learn about the water molecule and its composition.
