Study Notes
7 Life Processes
- Living organisms perform 7 essential life processes: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition.
Photosynthesis
- Definition: Chemical reaction converting sunlight into potential energy, stored as sugars (glucose to starch), releasing oxygen.
- Requirements:
- Water (H2O): Absorbed by plant roots from soil, a reactant in the chemical reaction.
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2): Absorbed by plants from the atmosphere, primarily through stomata (tiny pores) on leaf undersurfaces.
- Sunlight (Radiant Energy): Provided by the sun, converted into potential energy during photosynthesis.
- Chlorophyll: A green pigment in chloroplasts, absorbs radiant energy from the sun.
Stomata
- Pores in leaves, mostly on the undersurface, surrounded by guard cells that change shape to open or close stomata.
