Study Notes
Paragonimus westermanii (Lung Fluke)
- Infection occurs through ingestion of raw or undercooked crab or crayfish.
- Metacercaria encysts in the intestines, and the young flukes penetrate the intestinal wall and enter the peritoneal cavity.
- Flukes migrate to the lungs, where they become encapsulated by fibrous cysts, which always contain a pair of flukes.
- Cysts contain eggs and connect to bronchi channels, releasing eggs through sputum when they rupture.
Disease and Injury
- Migrating flukes cause peritonitis, pleuritis, myositis, and multifocal pleural haemorrhage.
- Chronic bronchiolitis and chronic eosinophilic granulomatous pneumonia can occur.
- Cysts can also lodge in other organs, including the brain.
- Paragonimus westermanii is endemic in the Bicol Region.
Other Parasites
Posthodiplostomum cuticula
- Causes haemorrhagic enteritis.
- Definitive host (DH) is a snail.
- Intermediate host (IH) is a snail.
- Mode of infection (MOI) is through ingestion.
- Primary site (PS) is the intestines.
Apatemon gracilis
- Definitive host (DH) is a fox or mink.
- Intermediate host (IH) is a freshwater snail.
- Mode of infection (MOI) is through ingestion.
- Primary site (PS) is the intestines.
Prosthogonimus ovatus
- Causes perforation of the bony walls of sinuses.
- Definitive host (DH) is a dog, cat, or wild carnivores, including man.
- Intermediate host (IH) is a freshwater snail.
- Mode of infection (MOI) is through ingestion.
- Primary site (PS) is the sinuses.
Other Parasites
- Planorbis species can infect through ingesting infected ants.
- Littorina littorae can infect through ingesting infected snails.
- Salmon poisoning occurs through eating raw infected Salmonid fish.

Description
Learn about the life cycle of Paragonimus westermani, a parasitic fluke that infects humans through ingestion of raw crabs or crayfish. Understand how the flukes travel through the body, from the intestines to the lungs, where they form cysts containing eggs. Explore how the eggs are eventually released from the body through sputum.
