Critical Reading Strategies

  • There are 12 strategies for critical reading, including paraphrasing, comparing and contrasting, evaluating an argument, reflecting on challenges to your beliefs and values, looking for patterns of opposition, judging the writer's credibility, exploring figurative language, recognizing emotional manipulation, and using the SQ3R method.

SQ3R Method

  • Introduced by Francis Pleasant Robinson, the SQ3R method involves surveying the text, questioning, reading, reciting, and reviewing.

Characteristics of a Critical Thinker

  • A critical thinker understands the relation of one idea to another, determines the importance and relevance of ideas and arguments, recognizes, builds, and appraises ideas and arguments, identifies inconsistencies and errors in reasoning, approaches problems in a consistent and systematic way, and reflects on the justification of their own assumptions, beliefs, and values.
