Study Notes

Text Information

  • Text is a simple and flexible format for presenting information or conveying ideas, whether handwritten, printed, or displayed on-screen.
  • According to Rouse (2015), text is any "human-readable sequence of characters" that can form intelligible words.

Principles and Elements of Text Design

  • Emphasis: importance or value given to a part of the text-based content.
  • Appropriateness: how fitting or suitable the text is for a specific audience, purpose, or event.
  • Proximity: how near or far text elements are from each other, with closely related elements brought together.
  • Alignment: how the text is positioned on the page (left, center, right, or justified).
  • Organization: conscious effort to organize different text elements on a page.
  • Repetition: consistency of elements and unity of the entire design, achieved by repeating some typefaces within the page.
  • Contrast: creates visual interest by making two elements different from each other.

Classifying Information

  • Formal Information: socially shared and objective, examples include birth certificates, government records, and business documents.
  • Informal Information: unsocial, highly opinionated, and subjective, examples include opinions from tabloids and social media, posts, and comments.

Visual Information

  • Visual design enhances usability and improves user experience using imagery, color, shapes, typography, and form.

Elements of Visual Design

  • Lines: used for stressing words or phrases, connecting content, creating patterns, and more.
  • Color: generates emotions, defines importance, creates visual interest, and unifies branding.
  • Texture: relates to the surface of an object, adding depth and visual interest to graphic design.
  • Size: conveys importance, attracts attention, and creates contrast.
  • Shapes: three basic types are geometric (circles, squares, triangles), natural (leaves, trees, people), and abstract (icons, stylizations, and graphic representations).
