Definitions

  • Definition is composed of three elements: definiendum, definiens, and denotata.

Definiendum

Proximate Genus

  • The nearest general class to which a thing belongs.

Specific Differentia

Kinds of Definitions

Nominal Definition

  • Defines a thing according to its name or term.

Etymological Definition

Synonyms Definition

  • Presents another word, more popular or easily recognizable, to clarify a given term.

Description Definition

  • Talks of a thing in terms of physical appearance.

Real Definition

Definition by Property

Definition by Cause

  • Gives the factors that contribute to the constitution of a thing as such.

  • States the origin of or factor that produced the thing defined.

Definition by Material Cause

  • States the stuff or material from which the thing is made.

Rules of a Good Definition

Rule 1: Avoid Circular Definitions

  • Repeats the defined word in the definition.

  • Too narrow definitions exclude things that should be included in the definition.
