Leprosy (Hansen's Disease)
- Chronic infectious disease caused by slow-growing bacteria Mycobacterium leprae.
- Affects multiple body parts, including:
- Skin
- Peripheral nerves
- Mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract
- Eyes
- Can occur at any age, from early infancy to very old age.
Symptoms

Skin lesions:
- Blotchy
- Indurated (hardened)
- Red
- Anesthesia
- Hypopigmented center
- Muscle weakness
Diagnosis and Pathogenesis
- Lepromin test: positive
- Cell-mediated immunity: kills the organism, but damages nerves
- Perivascular/perineural granulomatous inflammation: a characteristic feature of the disease
