What Is the Lean Canvas?
The Lean Canvas is a one-page business model template designed to help entrepreneurs develop and communicate their business model effectively. The canvas was originally created by Ash Maurya, who adapted the concept from Steve Blank's Customer Development methodology and Alexander Osterwalder's Business Model Canvas.
Key Components of the Canvas
The Lean Canvas consists of nine key components:
- Value Proposition: This represents what benefit your customers get from using your product or service.
- Customer Segments: These represent specific groups of people or businesses you aim to reach and serve.
- Channels: These are the ways you reach and communicate with your customer segments to deliver a value proposition.
- Customer Relationships: This refers to the types of relationships a company has with different types of customers.
- Revenue Streams: These describe how a company generates revenue and makes money from its operations.
- Key Resources: These are the most important assets required to make a business model work.
- Key Partners: These are the external partners on whom the business depends for success.
- Key Activities: These are the things a company must do to make its business model work.
- Cost Structure: These are all the costs associated with running the business.
By filling out each section of the canvas, entrepreneurs can clearly see whether all parts of the business model fit together cohesively. Additionally, they can use the canvas as a living document to iterate and change their business model based on new information.
