Study Notes
Structure of the Sun
- The Sun consists of six distinct layers: three inner layers and three outer layers.
- Inner layers: Core, Radiative Zone, Convective Zone.
- Outer layers: Photosphere, Chromosphere, Corona.
- Prominences are features that can extend outward from the Sun and can be observed near sunspots.
Composition of the Sun
- The Sun is mainly composed of hydrogen (approximately 74%) and helium (approximately 24%).
- Additional elements (less than 1%) include oxygen, iron, and carbon.
- The core has around 64% helium and 35% hydrogen, with other elements making up a minimal portion.
Inner Layers
-
Core:
- Extends to about 138,000 km from the center; temperatures reach approximately 27 million degrees Celsius.
- Site of nuclear fusion, where hydrogen is transformed into helium, releasing vast energy.
-
Radiative Zone:
- Extends from the core to about 494,000 km; temperature around 7 million degrees Celsius.
- Energy moves through this zone via radiative diffusion; photons take nearly 200,000 years to traverse this layer.
-
Convective Zone:
- Ranges from the outer edge of the radiative zone to the surface at around 695,000 km; temperature approximately 2 million degrees Celsius.
- Energy is transferred through convection, with hot plasma rising, cooling, and sinking back down.
Transition Zone
- A thin layer separating the corona and chromosphere, characterized by rapid temperature changes from 1 million to 20 thousand degrees Celsius.
Outer Layers
-
Photosphere:
- The deepest layer observable, approximately 400 km thick, with temperatures between 3,700 and 6,200 degrees Celsius.
- Features include sunspots, faculae, and granules.
-
Chromosphere:
- Extends approximately 1,600 km, temperature ranges from 3,700 to 20 thousand degrees Celsius.
- Positioned above the photosphere, including the transition region.
-
Corona:
- Visible during solar eclipses, has a spiky appearance, extending millions of kilometers into space.
- Temperature reaches approximately 1 million degrees Celsius, significantly hotter than the Sun's surface.
Solar Wind
- A continuous flow of charged particles from the corona, primarily comprising electrons, protons, and alpha particles.
- It varies in speed and composition and interacts with Earth's magnetic field, sometimes causing geomagnetic storms and disrupting communications.
Sunspots and Solar Flares
- Sunspots: Temporary dark regions in the photosphere caused by high magnetic flux that inhibits convective heat transfer.
- Associated phenomena include solar flares (intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation) and coronal mass ejections (clouds of charged particles).
