Vehicle Policy
- Vehicles are integral to law enforcement functions, and employees must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in the performance of their duties.
Driver's License Requirements
- Employees operating BSO vehicles classified as commercial vehicles must obtain a valid Florida Commercial Driver License with proper endorsements for the type of vehicle they will be operating.
- Employees operating authorized emergency vehicles equipped with audible warning devices, displaying red or blue lights, and on call to respond to emergencies are exempt from the requirement to obtain a Florida Commercial Driver License.
Driver's License Reporting
- Employees whose driver's license is expired, suspended, or revoked are prohibited from driving any vehicle, including BSO vehicles, while conducting BSO business or on BSO property.
- Employees must immediately report any expiration, suspension, or revocation to their supervisor and correct the issue within 10 business days, unless an extension has been granted by Internal Affairs.
Driver License Validation
- The Human Resources Information Manager (HRIM) checks all active employee driver licenses for validity with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) at least once per month.
- The HRIM provides Internal Affairs and affected employees with any reports from DHSMV indicating a driver license issue, and Internal Affairs notifies the affected employee's Command.
- The Command takes appropriate action to ensure the employee rectifies any driver license issues within 10 business days of notice.
