Code of Ethics and Rules of Conduct
- Members of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department must be dignified, courteous, cooperative, and respectful with other members, officials, and the public.
Conduct and Performance
- Members must obey all lawful and proper orders and instructions from supervisors/commanders, and make inquiries if they do not understand an order.
- They must treat official business as confidential and only share information with authorized personnel or as directed by their supervisor/commander.
- Members must obey all municipal ordinances, state, and federal laws.
- They are responsible for the proper care, control, and use of assigned clothing and equipment.
- Members must maintain a satisfactory level of performance and take opportunities to enhance and improve their knowledge and competence.
Use of Force
- Members will never engage in cruel, degrading, or inhumane treatment of any person, and should refer to the current written directive on "Response to Resistance."
Rules of Conduct
- Members must intervene and/or report any violation of constitutional or civil rights, Code of Ethics, or Department directives committed in their presence.
- They must read and sign, acknowledging receipt and review of all current Department written directives.
- Members must be punctual, alert, and prepared for duty, and maintain assigned work schedules.
Confidentiality
- Members must keep confidential information obtained concerning the public, unless the performance of duty or legal provision requires otherwise.
Discretion
- Members must use discretion responsibly and within the law, considering all surrounding circumstances.
- Sworn members must not permit personal antagonisms or friendships to influence their exercise of discretion.
Integrity
- Members must not engage in acts of corruption or bribery, nor condone such acts by other members.
- They must refuse to accept gifts, favors, or promises that could compromise their integrity and undercut public confidence in the Department.
