- Latin American independence movements were led by different groups in different countries
- In Mexico, Indigenous and Mestizo groups played a key role
- Miguel Hidalgo, a priest, rang the bells of his village church in Dolores, Mexico and called for a rebellion against Spanish rule (Grito de Dolores) in 1810
- Hidalgo's followers, mostly Indigenous people (Indians) and Mestizos (mixed Indigenous and European), quickly grew to an army of 80,000
- The Spanish army defeated Hidalgo's uprising in 1811
- The revolution in Mexico was not over. A new leader, José María Morelos, fought the Spanish for four years.
- A Creole officer Agustin de Iturbide eventually defeated Morelos
- Mexican Creoles then feared losing their privileges in a Spanish-controlled colony.
- A revolution in Spain put a liberal group in power, changing the system
- Surprisingly, Creoles united to support Mexican independence from Spain
