    • In Mexico, Indigenous and Mestizo groups played a key role
    • Miguel Hidalgo, a priest, rang the bells of his village church in Dolores, Mexico and called for a rebellion against Spanish rule (Grito de Dolores) in 1810
    • Hidalgo's followers, mostly Indigenous people (Indians) and Mestizos (mixed Indigenous and European), quickly grew to an army of 80,000
    • The Spanish army defeated Hidalgo's uprising in 1811
    • The revolution in Mexico was not over. A new leader, José María Morelos, fought the Spanish for four years.
    • A Creole officer Agustin de Iturbide eventually defeated Morelos
