D and F Block Elements

D Block Elements
The d block elements include transition metals, which have a filled inner shell but only partially filled outermost shell. The f block elements consist of noble gases, actinides, and lanthanides. Noble gases have full valence electron shells, making them very stable and unreactive. Lanthanides are also known as rare earth elements because they were once considered rare when compared to s and p block elements, although they now have been found to be quite abundant in nature.
Lanthanides
Lanthanides are a group of 15 chemical elements located in Group 3, Period 7 of the periodic table. Sometimes referred to as the rare earth elements, this group consists of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, and yttrium.
These elements share similar properties due to their partially filled 4f orbitals and fully filled 5d orbitals, which result in shielding effects by the inner electrons. Consequently, the outer electrons experience weaker effective nuclear charges, resulting in small atomic sizes and similar ionic radii for all the lanthanide ions.
Applications of Lanthanides
Due to their unique properties, lanthanides have many practical applications. For example, they are used in magnets like those found in hard drives and headphones, high-strength materials such as glass and fiber optics, phosphors in light bulbs, and lasers in barcode readers and laser surgery equipment.
