Planning and Preparation
- Incorporate risk assessments when planning experiments
- Write Standard Operating Procedures before starting new processes/operations
- Plan for emergencies and know the location of emergency equipment (eyewashes, showers, spill kits, fire extinguishers, and fire pull stations)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Wear PPE and appropriate apparel (clothing that covers legs, closed-toe shoes, safety glasses)
- Wear gloves and a lab coat when working with hazardous materials
- Use the PPE hazard assessment tool to determine additional PPE requirements
Laboratory Operations
- Do not work alone with highly hazardous materials or operations
- Label all chemical containers, including oil/water baths and squirt bottles
