King Wimaladharmasooriya I (1592 - 1604 AD)
- King Wimaladharmasooriya I (formerly Prince Konappu Bandara) took power from the Portuguese who were attempting to install a puppet ruler.
- The Portuguese were angered by his actions as he had been baptized by them as Don Juan.
- He solidified his claim to the throne by marrying Kusumasana Devi, daughter of Karalliyadde Bandara.
- He liberated the Kandyan kingdom from the control of the Seethawaka kingdom by defeating King Seethawaka Rajasinghe.
- He was victorious against the Portuguese in the battles of Danture (1594) and Balana (1602).
- He promoted Buddhism by bringing back Upasampada (higher ordination) from Burma to Sri Lanka, and renovating Buddhist temples.
- He brought the Sacred Tooth Relic to Kandy, which had been hidden in a Kurahan grinding stone for protection.
