Kidney Structure
- The kidney is composed of medullary pyramids (renal columns) arranged as renal columns
- Each kidney has approximately one million nephrons, the functional units of the kidney.
- Each nephron comprises a glomerulus and a renal tubule.
Nephron Structure
- The glomerulus is a tuft of capillaries formed by the afferent arteriole (a branch of the renal artery).
- Blood from the glomerulus is carried away by the efferent arteriole.
- The renal tubule begins with a double-walled cup-like structure called Bowman's capsule that encloses the glomerulus.
- The glomerulus and Bowman's capsule form a structure called the malpighian body or renal corpuscle.
- The renal tubule continues further to form a tightly coiled proximal convoluted tubule.
- From there, it continues to a descending and ascending loop, and then to a highly coiled distal convoluted tubule, before opening into the collecting duct.
Kidney Function
- The process described above is important in filtering the blood, eventually leading to urine production.
