Study Notes
Kidney Location and Structure
- Kidneys are located in the retroperitoneal space, posterior to the abdominal wall, on either side of the vertebral column.
- The right kidney is positioned higher than the left kidney.
Hilum and Renal Sinus
- Each kidney has a hilum, which extends into the renal sinus.
- The hilum transmits the renal vein, branches of renal arteries, pelvis, and ureter.
Kidney Covering
- The kidneys are covered by a fibrous capsule, peri-renal fat, renal fascia, and para-renal fat.
Kidney Internal Structure
- The kidney has two distinct regions: cortex (dark brown) and medulla (light brown).
- The medulla is composed of renal pyramids, each with a base and apex, and renal papilla.
Urinary System
- The upper expanded end of the ureter within the sinus is called the renal pelvis.
- The renal pelvis is divided into three major calyxes, each of which further divides into three minor calyxes.
- Each minor calyx is indented by the apex of a renal pyramid, and renal papilla.
