Study Notes
Hormones and their Functions
- Aldosterone is responsible for regulating fluid and electrolyte balance.
Renin's Function
- Renin is an enzyme produced by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidneys that stimulates the production of angiotensin II, which leads to vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure.
Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP)
- ANP is secreted by cells in the right atrium and stimulates the kidneys to secrete water, resulting in increased urine production.
Vasopressin (ADH)
- Vasopressin works on the collecting ducts to make them more permeable to water, leading to increased water reabsorption and decreased urine production.
Erythropoietin (EPO)
- EPO is activated by low oxygen in the blood and is responsible for stimulating red blood cell production in the bone marrow.
Kidney Functions
- The kidneys do not store nutrients, so this is NOT a function of the kidneys.
Renin's Main Function
- The main function of renin is to convert angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, which is then converted to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor.
Calcium Absorption
- Vitamin D is responsible for the absorption of calcium, promoting bone growth and development.
