Study Notes
Urinary System Structure and Function
- The nephrons, specifically the renal corpuscle (Bowman's capsule and glomerulus), filter blood and convert the filtrate into urine.
Kidney Location and Structure
- The left kidney is located near the spleen, between the 11th and 12th ribs.
- Renal fascia surrounds the kidney and attaches it to the surrounding structures, providing support and protection.
Hormonal Regulation
- Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is released in response to decreased blood calcium levels.
- PTH stimulates the reabsorption of calcium and inhibits the excretion of phosphate in the renal tubules.
Aldosterone and Water Reabsorption
- Aldosterone regulates water reabsorption by stimulating the reabsorption of sodium ions, which in turn increases water reabsorption.
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
- Inulin or creatinine clearance can be measured to estimate GFR.
- GFR is influenced by factors such as blood pressure, resistances in afferent and efferent arterioles, and capillary surface area.
- Increased sympathetic nerve activity is NOT a factor that influences GFR.
Tubular Reabsorption
- Most sodium reabsorption occurs in the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) of the nephron tubule.
- Reabsorption of nutrients, ions, and water is regulated, but reabsorption of urea is not.
Renal Plasma Clearance (RPC) and GFR
- RPC is the volume of plasma cleared of a substance per unit time, and GFR is the volume of plasma filtered per unit time.
- RPC can be greater than or less than GFR, depending on the substance's reabsorption or secretion.
Urine Characteristics and Excretion
- Urine is a yellowish, clear liquid with a characteristic smell and pH between 4.5 and 8.
- The average volume of urine excreted per day is around 1.5 liters.
Female Urethra
- The female urethra is shorter and wider than the male urethra.
Nephron Structure
- The proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) is composed of simple cuboidal epithelium with tall microvilli.
Collecting Tubules and Ducts
- Principal cells in the collecting tubules and ducts regulate water reabsorption and potassium secretion.
Juxtaglomerular Apparatus
- The juxtaglomerular apparatus is located near the afferent arteriole and is involved in regulating blood pressure and GFR.
Nephron Types
- Juxtamedullary nephrons are important in establishing a salt concentration gradient in the interstitial fluid.
Renal Blood Supply
- The correct sequence of arteries that supply the kidney, from largest to smallest, is: renal artery → segmental artery → interlobar artery → arcuate artery → cortical radiate artery.
- The correct sequence of veins through which blood leaves the kidney, from smallest to largest, is: stellate vein → interlobular vein → arcuate vein → interlobar vein → renal vein.
Renal Capillaries
- There are three types of capillaries in the kidneys: glomerular capillaries, peritubular capillaries, and vasa recta. Fenestrated capillaries are not one of the three types.
Urinary System Fluid Transport
- The correct sequence of structures that transport fluids through the urinary system is: kidneys → ureters → bladder → urethra.
