    Study Notes

Ancient Civilizations The concept of civilization dates back thousands of years with several key historical events shaping our understanding of human societies. One such example is the development of agriculture around 9500 BCE, which allowed people to settle down, rather than being nomadic hunters and gatherers. This change led to population growth, the rise of cities, and eventually, the creation of governments. Early civilizations were often based around river valleys because these areas had good soil for farming while also providing water for drinking and irrigation. Some early examples include Sumerians who developed the cuneiform writing system around 3000 BCE, Egypt's pyramid building period between 2600 - 2500 BCE, and China's Shang dynasty from the 17th century BC. These early civilizations set the stage for many more to come throughout history.

Medieval History During this time, Europe was divided into separate kingdoms, each ruled by kings or queens. Many rulers created their own laws called feudal law. Feudalism was a social system where knights swore loyalty to a lord in exchange for land. Society during this time was organized into three main groups: nobles (or lords), priests, and peasants. Christianity played an important role in society too; monks copied books by hand so they could spread knowledge widely across Europe. Urbanization increased as traders brought goods like salt and sugar to sell in towns and cities. In England, King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church when he wanted to divorce his wife Anne Boleyn, leading to the formation of the Anglican Church. During this time, exploration quickly became popular, with Christopher Columbus discovering America in 1492 and Vasco da Gama reaching India in 1498.

World Wars Two of the most destructive conflicts humans have ever seen took place within the span of just over two decades—the First World War lasting from 1914 to 1918 and the Second World War spanning from 1939 to 1945. Both wars changed how we see conflict by introducing new technologies—like tanks, airplanes, and machine guns—and new strategies like chemical weapons. They also demonstrated the power of propaganda and the importance of international politics. After the second war, countries formed organizations like NATO and the United Nations to prevent future wars from happening again. During both wars, women got involved in work outside their homes, driving buses, working in factories, serving in the military, and managing farms.

American Revolution In 1775, American colonists declared independence from Great Britain due to taxation without representation, among other things. By 1783, the thirteen British colonies along the Atlantic coast had become independent under the Articles of Confederation, forming the first national government. In 1788, the US Constitution replaced it, setting up a stronger federal government. At first, only white men could vote, but after the Civil Rights Movement in the mid-twentieth century, voting rights were extended to all adults regardless of gender, race, or income level. While some Native Americans were forced off their lands, others remained free throughout the revolution. Meanwhile, slavery continued, although many slaves freed themselves.

Renaissance Starting in Italy between 1300 and 1600 CE, the Renaissance was a period of cultural revival marked by interest in classical Antiquity. It saw great advances in art, music, literature, philosophy, science, and technology. New ideas about religion began to emerge, including Protestantism in Germany and the spread of Islam to Spain. The invention of printing made books cheaper and easier to produce, spreading knowledge far beyond the reach of monastery copyists. It also affected banking practices, trade routes, shipping techniques, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, geography, and cartography.
