Formation of Kerala State

• Kerala State was formed in November 1956 through the reorganisation of states on a linguistic basis
• The state's geographical area consists of three parts: the former princely states of Cochin and Travancore, and the Malabar area of the former Madras Province

Travancore-Cochin State

• Travancore and Cochin States merged into a single unit in July 1940, forming the Travancore-Cochin State
• This merger was in line with national policy

Co-operative Societies Acts

• Each of the three regions had separate Co-operative Societies Acts due to historical reasons
• The Cochin Co-operative Societies Act of 1913 was one such Act
• The first co-operative society registered under this Act was the Edavanakkad Co-operative Society No. 1
• The Edavanakkad Co-operative Society No. 1 was a credit society with unlimited liability
• The society still exists today, but is now known as the Edavanakkad Service Co-operative Bank Ltd No.1
