A research member is affiliated with BACH, the organization that is dedicated to saving stray animals here in Bacolod City. Initially, we planned on covering the different rescued animals in Silong which are cats and dogs. However, we chose to specifically set our parameters to just dogs for our study to be feasible.

The stray dog situation in Brgy. Granada is similar to other areas in that it involves common issues like overpopulation, lack of vaccination, and limited access to veterinary care. However, it differs because Brgy. Granada has Silong, a private shelter that actively rescues and provides care for stray dogs—something not commonly found in many communities.

Existing reports from the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Animal Industry highlight the rising cases of rabies and the growing stray dog population in urban and rural areas, including Bacolod City. Also, the local veterinary records and some studies that emphasize gaps in responsible pet ownership supports the urgency of this research.

There have been limited studies specifically focused on stray dogs hre in Bacolod, but nearby provinces like Iloilo and Cebu have conducted research on dog population control, disease prevalence, and ownership practices. These studies also highlight similar challenges in animal welfare and public health, showing the relevance of conducting a localized study in Brgy. Granada.

If risk factors among rescued stray dogs are not addressed, it can lead to increased disease transmission like rabies, uncontrolled population growth, and more incidents involving dog bites or road accidents. These consequences can pose serious threats to both public safety and animal welfare.

This study relates to public health by addressing the spread of zoonotic diseases and promoting responsible pet ownership, which reduces health risks in communities.

Silong currently serves as a private shelter that rescues, houses, and rehabilitates stray dogs in Brgy. Granada, playing a key role in reducing the number of free-roaming canines. Our study supports this by evaluating the health, population trends, and risk factors of the rescued dogs to help improve shelter practices and inform future community-based interventions.
