Karate Schools
- Shito School: founded by Kenwa Mabuni, named after instructors Itosu and Higaonna
- Goju School: founded by Chojun Miyagi, named after the Japanese words "Goken" (strong fist) and "Juken" (soft fist)
- Shotokan School: founded by Gichin Funakoshi, named after the term "Shoto" used by Funakoshi for calligraphy
- Wado School: founded by Hironori Ohstuka, based on the philosophy that Budo is the way of peace and harmony
Kiai
- Kiai-Jitsu: an old Japanese martial art that allows experts to break a glass with a loud shout
- Uses of Kiai:
- Before fighting to frighten or distract the opponent and to make one's spirit strong
- Immediately before an opponent attacks, to surprise or shock them and stop their attack
- When attacking, to disorientate and confuse the opponent
- When punching or kicking, to generate more power by focusing energy on the strike or kick
Mental Concepts
Fudoshin (Immovable Mind)
- A state of mind that remains calm and imperturbable in all circumstances, unaffected by external factors
- Developed by Takuan and Miyamoto Musashi, also known as "Iwa-No-Mi" or "Body like a Rock"
Heijo-Shin (Tranquil Spirit)
- A state of mind that remains calm and relaxed, without fear or worry
- Similar to Fudoshin, but with a focus on keeping normal feelings and not being afraid or worried
Yu-Nitsuite (Brave Heart)
- A state of mind that requires a brave heart, as technical skill alone is not enough to win a fight
- A famous Kendo master, Yagyu Seikisshusai, emphasized the importance of Yu-Nitsuite
Karate Ni Sente Nashi
- The concept that a Karateka must never attack first, mentally or physically
- Requires years of correct training to fully understand and maintain good manners and etiquette
Shinitai
- Means "Dead Body," referring to the importance of always being able to recover and move easily
- In Ohyo Gumite, one should never place their instep flat on the floor when thrown
Kime
- The focus of all physical and psychological forces at one point, resulting in pure effectiveness
Bunkai
- The concept of explaining and demonstrating the application of Karate moves to real-life situations
- Particularly important with Katas, but may have multiple Bunkai for each move
