Computer Fundamentals

  • Computer systems are electronic devices designed to accept data, process it according to a set of instructions, and produce results.
  • Key components include: input devices (keyboard, mouse, etc.), central processing unit (CPU) for processing, memory (RAM for temporary storage, ROM for permanent storage) and output devices (monitor, printer).
  • Data representation is crucial; computers store and manipulate data as binary digits (bits). Each bit represents either a 0 or a 1.
  • Programming involves authoring a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. Programming languages are the means of communicating these instructions.
  • Operating systems (OS) manage the computer's hardware and software resources. Examples include Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • Software refers to instructions and data that tell the computer how to perform specific tasks.
  • Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer.
  • Computer networks connect multiple computers to share resources and communicate. The Internet is a large network of networks.

Computer Generations

  • The history of computers is often divided into generations based on technological advancements.
  • First Generation (1940s-1950s): Vacuum tubes were the dominant technology. These computers were large, expensive, and consumed a lot of power. They were primarily used for scientific and military applications.
  • Second Generation (1950s-1960s): Transistors replaced vacuum tubes, leading to smaller, faster, and more reliable computers. Programming used assembly language. These computers became more accessible in business applications.
  • Third Generation (1960s-1970s): Integrated circuits (ICs) enabled even smaller and more powerful computers. This allowed for greater complexity in software and applications, including operating systems. High-level programming languages emerged like Fortran and C.
  • Fourth Generation (1970s-present): Microprocessors brought the computing power of large-scale computers onto a single chip. Characterized by significant advancements in speed, storage capacity, and affordability. Personal computing became prevalent. This involved advancements in both hardware components and software development.
  • Fifth Generation (Hypothetical): This generation is characterized by artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and natural language processing. The goal is to create computers that can learn and reason like humans. The technology is not yet fully realized, though advancements are rapidly occurring in the areas of AI and machine learning.
  • Each generation brought improvements in speed, size, power consumption, and cost. The transition from one generation to the next is marked by major technological breakthroughs enabling advancements in software and hardware.
