Study Notes
Kannada is one of the most widely spoken languages in South India with nearly sixty million speakers worldwide. It has its roots in ancient times and is closely related to other Dravidian languages like Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Sanskrit. The name 'Kannada' comes from the word Kanavu, which means 'humanity', reflecting the people who make up this large culture.
One of the key facets of Kannada culture is its vibrant literary tradition. Kannada literature dates back to more than two thousand years ago when it was used by the early inhabitants of present-day Karnataka state to record their social and political history. Over time, it grew into a sophisticated form of expression, often based on traditional themes such as love, warfare, religious beliefs, and spiritual quests. This genre also produced several classical works, including Kalidasa's Raghuvamsa, Kumaravyasa's Bharatiya Vishnu Purana, and Akka Mahadevi's poetry collection, all of which have become some of the finest examples of old Kannada literature.
The modern period saw a dramatic increase in the number of popular writers. Among them were Kuvempu, DV Gundappa, CN Adiga, and Masti Venkatesha Iyengar, whose contributions to Kannada literature helped raise its profile both within India and internationally. Particularly notable among these writers is the poet and dramatist Pampa, considered the father of Kannada drama, due to his work in developing distinctively Kannadiga plays. Today, there are numerous magazines, newspapers, journals, books, audio tapes, video cassettes, internet websites, and television programs available in Kannada, creating a wide range of sources for readers interested in exploring the region's cultural heritage through literature.
