Kannada is one of the most widely spoken languages in South India with nearly sixty million speakers worldwide. It has its roots in ancient times and is closely related to other Dravidian languages like Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Sanskrit. The name 'Kannada' comes from the word Kanavu, which means 'humanity', reflecting the people who make up this large culture.
One of the key facets of Kannada culture is its vibrant literary tradition. Kannada literature dates back to more than two thousand years ago when it was used by the early inhabitants of present-day Karnataka state to record their social and political history. Over time, it grew into a sophisticated form of expression, often based on traditional themes such as love, warfare, religious beliefs, and spiritual quests.
