Course Description
- Study of mass media and media technologies, including functions, responsibilities, practices, and influences.
- Study of media law, ethics, history, development, and future potential.
- Designed to raise awareness of mass media's impact on society.
- Also listed as CTVR 1. Credit given in either area, not both.
- Students transferring to UC or CSU should check ASSIST.org to confirm course articulation.
Course Outcomes
- Explain the impact of new technologies on mass communication.
- Describe the history and impact of mass communication on culture and society.
- Compare and critique media portrayals of diversity and gender issues.
- Define media literacy and its relevance to individuals and society.
Contacting the Instructor
- Email is the only acceptable method of contacting the instructor.
- Only replies during normal business hours (weekdays)
- No 5-minute replies at 11:55 pm.
- Only replies to college emails unless prior arrangements are made.
Textbook, Technology, and Materials
- Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) course
- Open Educational Resources (OER) used.
- Readings, articles, case studies, and multimedia components (videos, podcasts).
- Materials often in public domain or under Creative Commons license.
- All course materials are vetted.
- Lectures are in-class; no online recordings available until morning of that day.

Technical Requirements
- Students must have basic computer competency.
- This includes locating, creating, moving, copying, deleting, naming, renaming, and saving files and folders on hard drives, USB drives, and cloud-based applications (Google Workspace).
- Use Saddleback College email accounts.
- Students must use a word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word).
- Students must use internet browsers (e.g., Chrome, Safari).
- Students must have Google Workspace or Microsoft Office for assignments.
- Students must maintain a working Saddleback College student email account.

Course Schedule
- The syllabus includes a detailed course schedule with weekly topics.
Assignments and Assessments
- Weekly modules open the week prior on Fridays.
- Majority of lectures are on Tuesdays.
- Perusall assignments due by the start of Tuesdays' class.
- Participation grade based on class time participation (One absence can be dropped).
- End-of-week quizzes (10% of final grade).
- Media Activities (20% of final grade).
- Exams (30% of final grade - midterm and final).
- Submissions with a 24 hour grace period. Later submissions have a 15% penalty.
Grading
- Grades are based on a points system.
- Grades are based on the quality, formatting, completeness, and critical thinking of submitted assignments and class participation.
- A, B, C, D, and F grades in the percentages 90-100%=A; 89-80%= B; 79-70%=C; 69-65%=D; 64-0%=F.
- Grade reports are available in Canvas.
Classroom Policies
- Students are expected to behave professionally, ethically, and respectfully during class.
- No electronic devices during class (unless documented accommodations).
- Any emergency texts or calls require leaving the classroom.
- Respectful dialogue about sensitive topics
- Punctuality and attendance are important and affect the Participation grade.
- Appropriate use of generative AI tools in assignments, including clear attribution.
